Playa del Carmen
Halfway between Cancún and Tulum, Playa del Carmen offers something neither has on its own: the infrastructure and connectivity of an established tourist destination, with a more walkable and local feel than Cancún's Hotel Zone, and without the isolation or inflated prices of Tulum. Along with Merida, it's one of the destinations that has grown the most among digital nomads and expats in recent years, thanks in large part to Fifth Avenue, the city's pedestrian heart.
Fifth Avenue runs through the center of the city parallel to the sea, with restaurants from around the world, shops and bars that keep it active day and night. A few blocks toward the sea are Playa del Carmen's public beaches, and ferries to Cozumel leave from the municipal pier, a half-day excursion popular among residents. Outside the tourist corridor, the city runs on supermarkets, pharmacies and good-quality private medical services, plus direct highway connections to Cancún, Tulum and Merida.
The most walkable area, close to Fifth Avenue and the beach. Ideal for those who want restaurants, nightlife and the sea a few minutes' walk away, with the trade-off of being the most touristy and noisy area.
A private, tree-lined development south of downtown, with a golf course, private beach and more security. The preferred option for families and those seeking quiet without getting too far from city life.
A luxury development north of the city with navigable lagoons, five-star hotels (Rosewood, Fairmont, Banyan Tree) and an oceanfront golf course. The most exclusive and private area in all of Playa del Carmen.
